I don’t know what industry you’re talking about and I don’t think my path is normal to any industry I work in. But as a general rule you need to make good artwork probably for yourself and hope it gets shared enough that you get noticed.
Spending time with other creatives is also important for learning (I still assist friends when I can because I love being on set), expanding and also for job opportunities. I rarely get work outside of my network and I rarely hire people who aren’t in someway connected to my network.
